Boat Railing

Boat Railing

Client: Spacegrade Composite Engineering

Other Software

Project

Client requested visualization of custom made carbon fiber handrailing for their customers boat. Handrailing was to be made to same specs as the original boat railing, except made using carbon fiber and following motif with some other products using a chrome collar on joining tubes. This rendering was intended to be shown to the client prior to fabrication.

The initial model was made using Autodesk Maya. The model was then imported into blender for lighting using a combination of photo HDRI maps and maps produced using HDR Light Studio, then rendering in cycles using a material I specially made to mimic the look and behavior observed on the clients own carbon fiber materials. The material was made using a combination of practical and procedural textures made using substance designer. The scene was then finalized and composited using Photoshop.

Thoughts and Notes

Although not specifically asked of me. I enjoyed creating a quick composite render of the railing on the actual boat as I believe it adds value for the end customer. This came to me as an after thought but was an easy 45 minute project including holdouts and AOVs.

I phone photos are a pain to work with. The in phone stabilization changes how the sensor interacts with the lens and can make camera matching a pain.

Yacht Loop

Yacht Loop

Client: Spacegrade Composite Engineering

Other Software

Project

Client requested visualization of custom made carbon fiber loop which is anchored at the back of a yacht, limo, or boat. This is a product that has already been fabricated so photos of real-world reference were made available to me, which saved me a bit of time. Total modeling and texturing time came to about 3 hours. Bright white background and studio lighting that maintained consistency with the warmth off the existing photo studio setup the client uses was expected.

At a later date it was requested to do a short video for the product as well. This was shot in 3 lighting setups, 4 cameras and took around 12 hours start to finish including render time.

Thoughts and Notes

Material went through multiple revisions as this was the first project with this client. This was prior to formally making a proprietary carbon fiber texture which accurately represents the specific materials used to produce their products.

The first 3 still renders were a rush job using basic carbon fiber which anyone can create easily in substance and needed to be produced over night so it obviously had a short deadline. I had substantially more time to produce the materials used in the video and I am much happier with the results. It was a difference of needing the render the next day and not needing it for a work week.

We have since developed a new carbon fiber material which will be used on all future projects.

Modified Boat

Modified Boat

Project

I was hired to model and 3D render a boat from CAD drawings to display to a customer. This boat is a modification of an existing boat that allows for a wheel chair to be rolled in from the front. Although the CAD design was already made, besides it not being 3D modeled, making changes near impossible, it also was only the haul and the expectation was a visualization of the entire final product. Total project time came out to around 20 hours including render and post production time.

Thoughts and Notes

It was noted to the client that based on the drawing, I am not sure a wheel chair will be fitting through the front of this boat but thankfully this is just for visualization purposes and that is an issue that could be taken up with the CAD designer.

This was made using the first early stages the proprietary carbon fiber material made for Spacegrade. This specific variation I feel does not do the nuances of carbon fiber justice but the client was happy so I am also.

This specific boat model, unmodified, is actually very easy to find reference photos of but very hard to find good ones. It is not a boat most people post nice photos of or use in photo shoots so I actually found a seller and gave them a call to see if they had some more photos I might be able to see. They were nice enough to send over a few more photos they send to prospective buyers which I was able to use to build a more accurate final model.
