A few days ago I was helping on a photoshoot where it was snowing and was thinking how cool it would be to do an Arch Viz render with a snowy scene. I wanted to do something relatively quick so I used a chair model I used for another scene, retextured a book model I had, and used Marvelous Designer to make a blanket and curtain. Total work time including render was around 4 hours. The render came out very noisy even using light portals and bidirectional path tracing at nearly 9k samples. I considered using denoising but the problem then became that the denoised image was incredibly blurry. I decided in the end to use a mix of the 2 so I wasn’t sitting on the project for a week since I wanted this done in 1 day. I took the 2 layers into Photoshop and blended them together until I got something I liked and then using camera raw pulled up the texture slider and sharpening just to give it a little added boost of clarity back. I will likely revisit this project again in the future as part of a larger scene where I will spend a little more time on the sampling problem.

Thoughts and Notes

The blanket knitting is actually modeled. I likely could have gotten away with a displacement map or bump/normal combo perhaps, since there is a particle system as well, but I really wanted the added realism of the knitting so I modeled out a repeatable loop and arrayed it in both the X and Y direction and then applied the blanket from Marvelous Designer as a deformer for the now knitted blanket so it would take on the shape of the fabric.

The lighting wasn’t behaving from the HDRI how I wanted it to because of a bunch of street lights in the way so I added some nodes to filter out the yellow light and made the film transparent so it would only emit blue light into the scene. I also added a low intensity sun lamp which was also emitting blue which I could make directional and gave it the same light angle as the moons reflection angle which yielded good results. I then comped the new background in afterwards in Photoshop.

Carbon Fiber Chair Concept

Project

Concept for a lounge chair modification. Tasked with finding different household furniture or appliances which may be modified with carbon fiber. This specific design is a common luxury lounge chair which is also highly sought after so I felt it may fair well with a carbon fiber finish. Model by Poliigon. Carbon fiber material and some other textures were made by myself.

This is a study for basic product visualization. Total project time is roughly 4 hours. Modeling and materials took around 3 hours, textures and materials about another 45, and then some simple lighting on each side to highlight the label and illuminate the serum was pretty basic only involving 2 lights and a flag.

This project took about 14 work hours. All metal textures were made using custom written nk files and textures made using photoshop and substance designer. The model was originally made in maya, then I brought it into blender for particles and rendering. For the box, I used a hair particle system along with a base texture and the rope is fully modeled with twists. Advertisement style render was lit using HDR Light Studio and the final outputs were rendered using LuxCoreRender.

Boat Railing

Boat Railing

Client: Spacegrade Composite Engineering

Other Software

Project

Client requested visualization of custom made carbon fiber handrailing for their customers boat. Handrailing was to be made to same specs as the original boat railing, except made using carbon fiber and following motif with some other products using a chrome collar on joining tubes. This rendering was intended to be shown to the client prior to fabrication.

The initial model was made using Autodesk Maya. The model was then imported into blender for lighting using a combination of photo HDRI maps and maps produced using HDR Light Studio, then rendering in cycles using a material I specially made to mimic the look and behavior observed on the clients own carbon fiber materials. The material was made using a combination of practical and procedural textures made using substance designer. The scene was then finalized and composited using Photoshop.

Thoughts and Notes

Although not specifically asked of me. I enjoyed creating a quick composite render of the railing on the actual boat as I believe it adds value for the end customer. This came to me as an after thought but was an easy 45 minute project including holdouts and AOVs.

I phone photos are a pain to work with. The in phone stabilization changes how the sensor interacts with the lens and can make camera matching a pain.
